Spondon turns out again for Christmas Lights Switch-On

More than a thousand people lined the streets of Spondon village centre once again on Friday night for this year's Spondon Alight Christmas Lights Switch On Event.

The event, organised by the Spondon Traders Association, is now in its third year and continues to grow both in the size of the event and the number of people attending. Right from the start of the evening, Sitwell Street and Chapel Street were buzzing with families and friends meeting up and enjoying the atmosphere.

Traders throughout the village opened their doors to late night shoppers, offering special discounts along with free festive drinks and nibbles. A special Christmas market area on Chapel Side precinct featured stalls and kiddies rides while the Village Hall played host to more stalls plus Santa's special Spondon Grotto.

A large stage behind the Village Hall hosted various entertainment throughout the evening, including the cubs bell ringers, Danceworks Unlimited dancers and Mixed Blessings Choir.

The entertainment was brought to a close by Spondon's Rick Sheehan who, despite being hindered by a few technical problems, kept the crowds entertained with singing and jokes.

As people lined both sides of Sitwell Street, a round of fireworks was the cue for the big switch-on, and the thousands of Christmas lights around the village burst into life to cheers and applause.

Huge congratulations and thanks to Spondon Traders Association and everyone else who was involved in making the evening another hugely enjoyable success. It was great to once again see the Spondon community coming together to support such a key event in the local calendar.
