Celanese have confirmed that the demolition of most of its historic plant in Spondon is to commence in August.
The demolition of the acetate tow production facilities will begin with the removal of equipment, then proceed with dismantling and demolishing the building units. The work is currently scheduled to last approximately 18 months and will be carried out by UK-based controlled demolition specialists, Squibb Group Ltd.
The main Celanese plant was decommissioned when the company ceased production in 2012. The company's stand-alone diacetate film production unit Clarifoil remains operational as normal in an area of the site.
As part of its bid to keep the public and local community updated during the demolition process, Celanese have launched a new website dedicated to the demolition work which contains lots of FAQs addressing some of the key questions and concerns raised about the process. The website also contains a history of the site, some old photos of the plant and contact details for anyone wishing to ask a question about the project.
