The residents of Spondon opened their gardens and patios to the public for their two day annual Social Safari in July. Organisers Roy Battelle and John Fooks say the popularity of the Safari has increased over the years, with participants reporting visitors to their 'safari stops; from far and wide.
The Mayor of Derby, Councillor Shiraz Khan opened this year's event on the Saturday morning at The Homestead, one of the very few Grade I listed properties within the city. Also in attendance was our MP Mrs Pauline Latham, Ward Councillors and a sizeable crowd of Villagers.
The event featured a host of attractions over the weekend included crown green bowling, premier league cricket, classic motor bikes, bric-a-brac stalls, seaside fun and Christmas in July along with a wide choice of refreshments all going towards creating wonderful friendly social atmosphere.
In addition to the community social aspects of the event, it's also a great fund raiser. Each stop along the route has their own favourite charity and collectively raised more than £3,800 despite the appalling weather on Saturday afternoon. Each participant has also made a donation to the Village Improvement Committee who do so much to enhance the floral appearance of our Village, with contributions to the VIC funds now topping £900.
Congratulations to all the Safari 'stops' also to everyone who toured around enjoying the experience and donating to good causes.
