Teenagers in Spondon have carried out a TV style “Garden Makeover” for a single mum who lives on Kirklees Ave North.
A team of around 15 local youngsters and youth club members got together and spent all day on a Saturday clearing, tidying and cutting hedges in the back garden. On a newly laid grassed area they provide play equipment and a sand pit for the children of the young family one of whom has now joined the Youth Club.
Funding was arranged through the Neighbourhood Board who bid into a Derby City Partnership scheme designed to motivate, engage and occupy young people called "Be Inspiring".
Gardens of single parents, elderly and partially sighted people in the are have been refurbished. The teenagers identified the family they wanted to help and spent the money on plants, bulbs, turf, play equipment and furniture.
After a long cold day (and a lot of pizza!), the young mum saw the transformation and told the workers: "This is brilliant, you have all worked so hard, it’s amazing you have all come to do this for us. I couldn’t have done if for myself."
A big ‘well done’ to all involved!
