Spondon's new Neighbourhood Officer is Sonia Hardy, taking over from Mandy Douglass who departed last month. Sonia sent us this introduction:
Hello, my name is Sonia Hardy and I am your new Neighbourhood Officer.
I am looking forward to working with representatives from the Spondon Neighbourhood Board, local residents and teams within Derby City Council and partner agencies to respond to, help to identify and resolve neighbourhood issues in your area. Issues can include anti-social behaviour, dog fouling, noise nuisance, grounds maintenance, traffic and highways and inconsiderate parking.
I am also looking forward to supporting the Board in delivering projects that address the Board priorities and make improvements for the community.
Priorities for 2014/15 are:
• Build a stronger Spondon Community
• A better built and natural environment
• Being safe and feeling safe
• An active and cultural life
I have already had the pleasure of spending a morning with children from St Werburgh’s Primary School and their teachers planting crocus bulbs on a grassed area near residential properties on West Road. (pictured right)
The Spondon Neighbourhood Board funded the bulbs and Derby Homes allowed this activity to take place on their land. It was a cold morning but by the time the first group of children arrived Derby Homes staff, their contractors, Councillor Chris Poulter, Nicola Roulstone Spondon Neighbourhood Board member, myself and Adam Hulatt Neighbourhood Officer for Chaddesden Ward, had warmed up considerably after digging numerous holes in readiness for the bulbs.
The children were all extremely well-behaved and a real credit to the school. They thoroughly enjoyed the event. I think some would have wanted to carry on had we not run out of holes. They were able to take some bulbs home with them too! Local residents remarked on what a good idea it was to involve the children in this community project, as the children would feel a sense of achievement having given their time to improve the area for the community.
The fruits of their labour will be seen in the Spring. Well done St Werburgh’s!
