Well, the 23rd November arrived after a week of downpours and gales, and weren’t we lucky! The skies cleared, the wind dropped and the sun shone. After so many months of planning and preparation the day arrived. What a day and evening it turned out to be.
The stage at the back of the Village Hall saw some amazing entertainment from the Woden Cub Scouts with their bell ringing (live on Radio Derby, no less!!), Mixed Blessings Choir, St Werburgh’s School with their very touching procession and carols, Derby Acapella Chorus, a superbly skilful barber shop singing act, Danceworks Unlimited from Edmund Hall and Spondon’s own special impersonator Rick Sheehan. What a marvellous show they all put on, it was fantastic to watch and hear.
The lights were turned on by our own Carnival Queen Kimberleyrose Osbiston, with Carnival Princess Lauren Cook, assisted by Rick Sheehan. With a wonderful firework display, the lights were switched on. Despite the occasional technical problems, it was great to see so many people once again enjoying this special event, and walking throughout our Village.
There are a number of people without whom the event could not have taken place. Tim and Tony from Spondon Hardware, Sheila from Crafty Ways, Julie from Lash and Beauty, Angie the Fairy Queen (and Santa!), the Spondon Army Cadets, the young people that carried the collecting buckets, everyone in the Village Hall and so many others that helped so much.
Finally, the Spondon Traders Association would like to wish everyone a Happy and Prosperous, Healthy Christmas and New Year.
Mark Davis, Chairman, Spondon Traders Association
